RUGMARK INDIA
RUGMARK is a certification trademark, which assures importers and buyers that carpets with this label have been manufactured/exported by a company which has committed itself to work without illegal child
labour, and which is subject to an effective surveillance mechanism.
RUGMARK Foundation, India was incorporated in September 1994 under Sec. 25 of the Indian Companies Act of 1956, as a private, voluntary, non-profit entity.
RUGMARK - THE START
Intensive campaigns against the use of child labour led to a proposal to totally boycott the import of carpets from India. To avoid the negative consequences of such a step on workers, exporters and carpet manufacturing regions positive solutions were needed.
Consequently,
RUGMARK, the initiative against the use of illegal child labour in the carpet industry, was initiated in 1994 by Indian carpet manufacturers and exporters along with many leading non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Together with UNICEF and the Indo-German Export Promotion Project (IGEP) of the German Agency for Technical Co-operation (GTZ) the
RUGMARK system was developed.
