Number of Carpets with RUGMARK label as on 31.01.2010

The labelling activities started on a trial basis already in 1994. Since then the quantity of labeled carpets increased continuously.

Till beginning of 2000 already 2 million carpets have been labeled. Since then the annual number was normally between 350,000 and 500,000. There were mainly hand knotted and hand tufted carpets.

In addition small low priced carpets and coconut fibre mats have been given a small label from 2005 onwards.
The general market trend is also reflected in the Rugmark figures. The number of hand knotted carpets was considerably decreasing because of the market saturation and fashion influences. At the same time the numbers of hand tufted carpets shot up.
Low price dhurries and rugs remained more or less on the same level.

Up to the beginning of 2010 Rugmark India labeled around 6 million carpets.
(This figure does not include the low value small pieces from coconut fibre, wool, cotton or synthetic fibres)
