It all began ten years ago when due to a broad campaign of Indian and later foreign NGO's, importing countries like Germany, USA and UK threatened to boycott Indian carpets. The Mirzapur based Association of Carpet Manufacturers without Child Labour then approached IGEP and asked for help. RUGMARK started functioning in 1995 after intensive discussions with carpet manufacturers, exporters, NGOs from India and abroad, leading carpet importers and representatives from importing countries and international
organisations.
Today RUGMARK has more than 300 licencees in India alone. About 30 companies in Germany exclusively import and sell RUGMARK carpets from India. They are members of the RUGMARK Foundation, Germany. Besides approximately 200 carpet dealers, furniture stores and mail-order firms in Germany alone offer RUGMARK labelled carpets. Similar outlets exist in other American and European countries too. The family is constantly growing. Similar foundations meanwhile exist in Nepal, Pakistan, USA and UK. The major part of business is, however, between India and UK.
